Chronic illnesses and massage

February 1, 2018

Do you suffer from asthma, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, anxiety...?

Medicine has developed massively in the last decades. Now a days people receive early diagnosis and treatment for loads of different illnesses and most of the people around us take tablets or medication to help them cope with health problems.

Did you know massage can help as well?

When you have respiratory problems or anxiety related problems, the way you use your breathing muscles changes. That means you start over-using muscles that shouldn't be working on regular basis. Faulty breathing mechanics can lead to headaches, tight chest, muscular pain, poor gas exchange, tiredness... and further worsening of the condition. Massage and physical therapy can help break this vicious circle and improve some of the respiratory symptoms, bringing about improvement of symptoms in some cases.

Also, massage has an effect on the

parasympathetic nervous system. This affects the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the musculoskeletal system, the digestive system.... Your whole body! In other words, this means that your blood pressure will lower down, you'll sleep better, your bowels will regulate, the cortisol levels will drop...

Never neglect the treatment prescribed by your doctors, but if you still feel you want to have a more active role in looking after yourself, why not to book a massage?

The effects won't be long lasting, but a regular massage can definitely have a great impact on your chronic illness.

And of course, this means as well that there is no age limit for this kind of treatment! Anyone, no matter their age can benefit from a massage!
